Railway Axle Inspection

The inspection station is used to carry out geometric inspections of railway axles using a contact and optical measuring system

The equipment is fitted with four measuring supports, which are positioned side by side on a linear guide. Each support has its own longitudinal measuring mechanism and its own independent servo drive, meaning it can move longitudinally and take measurements at any transverse section. The outer supports also measure radii and lengths using an optical system. Each support contains a transverse hysteresis-free guide and a linear scale, two inductive probes positioned opposite each other, and an additional servo drive which ensures the measuring probes are fed towards the surface of the axle. The actual measurement of dimensions and shape deviations in both the transverse and longitudinal directions is carried out by the contact of the measuring probes. An operator loads the axle using a crane or automatically via an external manipulator into the loading prisms, which descend safely into the measuring position. Axle rotation is ensured by two interchangeable centring pins, one of which is driven by a servomotor.

The final transverse dimension is the sum of the readings on the linear scale and the deviations measured by the inductive heads. As the device has four supports that simultaneously measure the base and dependent diameters, floating-base methods can be used.

The measured parameters are displayed on the measuring system’s monitor, with the option to archive and print a report of both the measured and statistically analysed values.
